The TIE lesson: Introduction and Stations of alternative learning games

The TIE lesson was delivered to forty students of the 6th Gymnasium of Kavala by the participating students of the Drama Team who acted as teachers for a day.
The material used came from the exquisite work of ‘The Bulletin Board Lady’-Tracy King (thebulletinboardlady@yahoo.com), who granted the educator (who is really grateful) permission to use six pages with drills in this dissertation.

Introduction presented by students and projected through PowerPoint Slides

Everyone: Hello everyone!

Annie: We are the Drama Club of the 5th Lyceum and the 7th Gymnasium of Kavala and we are here to perform the classic musical “Annie”.

Grace: It all started as a cartoon strip in 1924 which took its name from the 1885 poem "Little Orphan Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley. It became a Broadway musical in 1977 and it was adapted into a film in 1982. This is actually the version you will see today! Two more movies were produced in 1999 and 2014.

Lily: We are in 1933 in New York, during the Great Depression (= a bad period when there was an economic crisis in the USA). A young orphan named Annie is living in the Hudson Street Orphanage in New York City. It is run by Miss Hannigan, a cruel alcoholic who forces the orphans to clean the building daily. With half of a locket as her only possession, she remains optimistic that her parents, who left her on the doorstep as a baby, will return for her.

Sally: Well! Here comes your part! We want to see whether you pay attention to details while attending an English play!

Kate: So… Be ready to thrive!!! You will form 6 teams (each will have a different name from the play) – Team Mrs. Greer / Team Rooster and the Asp / Team Miss Drake / Team Pepper / Team July / Team Lily

Duffy: During the whole performance you will be keeping notes (whenever you wish) in the sheets provided to you and after the performance, we will play a game!

Warbucks: Each team will follow a leader (one of the actors) and you will solve drills in 6 different stations five minutes (you will have 5 minutes for each station)! You will be awarded points for the correct answers.

Rooster: The team with the higher score will be the WINNER and WILL RECEIVE A PRIZE!

Hannigan: We really hope you enjoy both the performance and the game which follows!
We would also appreciate it if you did not make any noise since we have no microphones.

Pepper: At the end of this whole activity, your team leader will ask you a few questions on your experience.

Everyone: Thank you very much! Enjoy the show!!!

OK then! We really hope you enjoyed both the performance and the game afterwards!
Through this alternative (=εναλλακτικό) lesson we tried to see whether a high-school student may understand an English text. We also tried to see whether you find it fun and amusing to learn things this way. So, we have a few questions to ask you!
Please, give your answer by raising your hand.

1. How many students are there in this group? ________________

2. How many of you enjoyed the performance? _______________

3. How many of you liked this whole alternative lesson (with the game)? ______________

4. How many of you found it difficult to participate in English activities? ______________

5. How many of you think you may have learnt something in English today (for example about the American culture or history or maybe a new word)? ______________

6. How many of you believe you had the chance to practise your English through this alternative lesson (including both the performance and the game)? ________________

7. How many of you think that students are happier to use their knowledge through a game instead of the classic examination in a class? ___________________

8. How many of you think that English should be taught through fun activities? ________________

9. How many of you would like to take part in a similar project in the future as audience/students? ________

10. How many of you would like to take part in a similar project in the future as actors/teachers? _________
